About BetterEvaluation

Our vision is a world of better evaluation, better decisions, and better impact.

BetterEvaluation is a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity that operates globally.

Our mission is to work collaboratively with our global community to create, share and support use of knowledge about how to better plan, manage, conduct and use evaluation.

Our work on 'evaluation' includes the full range of monitoring and evaluation activities, frameworks, and systems, and includes evaluations of a project, program, policy, product, network, organisation, or strategy. It also includes evaluations that are known by different labels, such as impact assessment, impact measurement, or return on investment. See our page What is evaluation for more information on terminology.

Our principles

Our work and our organisation is guided by a set of principles that direct how we undertake capacity strengthening, how we manage our knowledge platform, and how we conduct ourselves and approach 'evaluation'. The overarching principles are: Do no harm and Do maximum good. You can read more about our principles here.

How we work

BetterEvaluation engages with individuals, organisations, and networks to bring together knowledge about evaluation from different sectors, disciplines, regions, languages and contexts.

BetterEvaluation aims to produce significant improvements in evaluation through its three integrated core elements:

  • BetterEvaluation engages in three inter-related activitiesa knowledge platform (betterevaluation.org)

  • discrete capacity strengthening activities with partner organisations

  • research and innovation projects

Through these integrated activities, we co-create, share and support use of knowledge about doing, managing and using evaluation better.

Create – We work collaboratively with evaluation experts and organisations from around the world to document innovative practice and produce new knowledge and knowledge products about evaluation.

Share – We provide online access to a comprehensive range of monitoring and evaluation options. Our ‘Rainbow Framework’ guides the selection and use of an evaluation method and/or process to help practitioners find the best approach for their needs. We provide advice from experts and practitioners and an overview of the tasks involved in evaluation – from planning to conducting an evaluation – in multiple languages.

Support use – We undertake integrated projects to strengthen individual, organisational and/or national evaluation capacities combining blended learning, technical assistance, quality review and support for peer learning.

We encourage members of our community to become contributors to the site. Contributors share recommendations for resources to add, and share their experiences of using particular methods, processes and approaches. Interested in contributing? Learn more here.

Our research and innovation projects

In addition to our freely available knowledge platform, we work on specific projects around evaluation capacity strengthening and research and innovation. Learn more about our projects here.

Our evaluation capacity strengthening activities

BetterEvaluation takes a principles-based and systems approach to capacity strengthening. We believe in taking the time to understand the existing strengths and needs at an individual and organisational level, and using this to determine what can be built on, how best to address important gaps over time, and what to prioritise first. You can read more about our approach to capacity strengthening here.

Organisational partners and financial supporters have access to BetterEvaluation's capacity strengthening services.
