An evaluation design sets out how data will be collected and analysed in terms of the methods used and the research design.
Evaluation designs should suit the particular evaluation in terms of the nature of the evaluation, the nature of what is being evaluated and the availability of resources:
- The nature of the evaluation: In particular, answering the key evaluation questions that have been identified, with methods that will answer different types of questions – descriptive, causal, and evaluative.
- The nature of what is being evaluated: Especially in terms of complicated or complex aspects that need to be addressed.
- The availability of resources: Especially time, money and existing data.
