This one-day course has been custom designed for people who want to commission better evaluations. It is for people with a role in planning, commissioning and managing evaluations. It is suitable for beginners through to those with a few years' experience.
The training is interactive and hands-on, with lots of practical examples and group activities through the day to keep the blood pumping and the brain ticking. It will provide you with tools that you can start using immediately..
Participants will gain knowledge and consolidate their understanding of:
- different types of evaluation and how they can be used to inform policy, strategy and project work
- principles and steps in successfully planning and implementing an evaluation project
- techniques for developing and prioritising your evaluation questions
- effective strategies for stakeholder engagement in the evaluation process
- elements that make up a good evaluation brief / approach to market
- factors that influence the scale, budget and timeframe of an evaluation
- what to look for in an external evaluation team
- assessment of evaluation proposals and the procurement process
- management of evaluation consultancies
- ethical conduct, governance and risk management in evaluation.
Participants will leave the workshop with skills and knowledge to commission better evaluations.

Who should attend?
Anyone working in government, the community sector or business who has a role in planning, commissioning or managing evaluations. No prior experience in evaluation is required.
About the facilitators
Duncan has over 18 years' experience in research and evaluation across a broad range of policy areas, organisational settings and methodologies.
He consults to a diverse mix of government agencies and NGOs and teaches in a number of executive education programs, including for the Australasian Evaluation Society (AES) and the Australian Market and Social Research Society (AMSRS).
In addition to his consulting work through Rooftop Social, Duncan has a part time appointment in the NSW Department of Education's Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation, leading the Department's efforts in evaluation capacity building. He has previously held roles at the University of Wollongong, Urbis and Wesley Mission.
Duncan served as a Director of the AES from 2012-16 and is an active member of the AMSRS, where he established the Government & Social Research Network in 2011. He holds a Master of Policy Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Economic Geography (both from UNSW), and is writing up his PhD at the University of Wollongong: 'Dynamic response formats in online surveys: Do they produce better data or are they just pretty toys?'. As part of this PhD work, Duncan won Best Paper at the AMSRS Conference in 2012 and 2014.
Vanessa is an energetic and skilled evaluator, facilitator and trainer with over 16 years' experience in a range of contexts.
Vanessa has a demonstrated track record in building individual and organisational capability for evaluative thinking, integrating training, coaching and mentoring with structural system-level changes to help establish evaluation and outcome-focussed approaches.
She is passionate about working with people and is known for her use of participatory approaches and creative group facilitation techniques to embed learning and adoption of new ideas.
With qualifications in Science, Vanessa has led a range of organisational and community behaviour change programs in sustainability and agriculture. Prior to joining Rooftop Social, Vanessa was the Evaluation Lead at Sustainability Victoria. There she held responsibility for numerous internal evaluations at project and strategic organisational levels.
