This blog is an abridged version of the brief Innovations in evaluation: How to choose, develop and support them, written by Patricia Rogers and Alice Macfarlan. It builds on a webinar delivered by Patricia Rogers in May 2018 as a joint project of UNICEF, BetterEvaluation and EVALSDGs. This blog opens up some of the issues and questions about why and how to adopt innovations in evaluation, while the brief goes into further detail about innovations that can be useful in addressing long standing challenges in evaluation.

The International Program for Development Evaluation Training is an executive training program that features a two-week Core Course, followed by two weeks of 26 in-depth workshops, taught by a dynamic group of renowned international faculty drawn from organizations around the world. The program is highly responsive to the changing international environment, addressing the requirements of new development policies and delivery mechanisms that favor local ownership, increased national accountability, and partnership. Similarly, the curriculum is designed to reflect the international shift in focus from project evaluation to more complex program-, policy-, country-, and even global-level evaluation.

The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science has commissioned this report to explore the challenges and document a range of possible approaches for the impact evaluations that the department conducts. Research for the project comprised interviews with key internal stakeholders to understand their needs, and a review of the literature on impact evaluation, especially in the industry, innovation and science context. That research led directly to the development of this guide. This research project is the first stage of a larger project to develop materials as the basis for building departmental capability in impact evaluation.

Julia Coffman is Director of the Centre for Evaluation Innovation. In the third blog of our innovation in evaluation series, she looks some recent innovations in a notoriously tricky area: advocacy evaluation. Last week, Thomas Winderl explored how development evaluation must evolve to meet the challenge of complexity and responsive planning. This week we’ll be reporting from the African Evaluation Association’s 7th international conference, where BetterEvaluation is supporting a strand of conference presentations and posters on methodological innovation.

As one of the EvalPartners, we'd like to share this EvalPartners announcement about the launch of the 2017 round of "Innovation Challenges". EvalPartners is a global partnership to strengthen national evaluation capacities. In November 2015, it launched the first ever long-term global vision for evaluation, developed during EvalYear 2015 through a participatory process with the global evaluation community.
