Strengthening administrative data systems for evidence-based policymaking in India

This blog from the Centre for Learning on Evaluation of Results, South Asia (CLEAR SA) discusses how strengthening administrative data systems is vital for evidence-based policymaking, as it allows for faster, more precise, and cost-effective evaluations.

However, challenges such as the lack of standard processes, interoperable systems, and limited government capacity impede data utilization.

To address these issues, CLEAR South Asia collaborated with the Indian government partners by advising on data policies, improving collection practices, and supporting data analytics units. A comprehensive data strategy, successful use cases, institutional arrangements, and partnerships are key to unlocking the potential of administrative data.

Successful strategies for better data use include creating clear communication frameworks, prioritising policy-driven data applications, ensuring adequate staffing and capacity building, and fostering collaborations with academic and private sector partners.
