About BetterEvaluation

We work collaboratively with our global community to create, share and support use of knowledge about how to better plan, manage, conduct and use evaluation.

The BetterEvaluation knowledge platform was launched in 2012. In 2022, BetterEvaluation became the knowledge platform of the Global Evaluation Initiative (GEI), a global coalition of organizations and experts working together to support country governments to strengthen monitoring, evaluation, and the use of evidence in their countries.

Our principles

The overarching principles that direct how we work are: Do no harm and Do maximum good

These principles direct every aspect of BetterEvaluation, including how we manage our knowledge platform, how we conduct ourselves and how we approach 'evaluation'.

What do we mean by evaluation?

Our work on 'evaluation' includes the full range of monitoring and evaluation activities, frameworks, and systems, and includes evaluations of a project, program, policy, product, network, organisation, or strategy. It also includes evaluations that are known by different labels, such as impact assessment, impact measurement, or return on investment.

How we work

BetterEvaluation engages with individuals, organisations, and networks to bring together knowledge about evaluation from different sectors, disciplines, regions, languages and contexts.

BetterEvaluation aims to produce significant improvements in evaluation through its two integrated core elements:

  • a knowledge platform (betterevaluation.org)
  • research and innovation projects

Through these integrated activities, we co-create, share and support use of knowledge about doing, managing and using evaluation better.

Create

We work collaboratively with evaluation experts and organisations around the world to document innovative practice and produce knowledge and knowledge products about evaluation.

Share

We provide online access to a comprehensive range of monitoring and evaluation methods. Our ‘Rainbow Framework’ guides the selection and use of an evaluation method and/or process to help practitioners find the best approach for their needs. We provide advice from experts and practitioners and an overview of the tasks involved in evaluation – from planning to conducting an evaluation, in multiple languages.

About our knowledge platform

BetterEvaluation.org has information and guidance on more than 300 methods and processes used in evaluation. Betterevaluation.org also hosts thousands of evaluation resources, detailed information on evaluation approaches and themes, blogs from evaluation experts, as well as guides and tools such as the Manager's guide to evaluation, and the GeneraTOR Terms of Reference generator.

What is the Global Evaluation Initiative (GEI)?

GEI is a global network of organizations and experts supporting developing country governments with strengthening monitoring, evaluation, and the use of evidence in their countries. GEI focuses its support on efforts that are country-owned and aligned with local needs, goals, and perspectives.

Partnerships are critical to what GEI does, and they are central to how the GEI network achieves its objectives. GEI global network includes bilateral and multilateral organizations, evaluation capacity service providers, civil society organizations, academic institutions, associations, and monitoring and evaluation experts. The diversity of GEI network brings many views to the table and helps to deliver support that is informed by global successes but is tailored to specific country needs and contexts.

Its strength is in the global, regional, and local expertise that GEI partners bring to the network and their commitment to the shared vision of helping to create better evidence for improved decision-making.
