The MPhil program focuses on the history and theory of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) as a developing 'discipline' in its own right, which is practiced within various contexts. M&E has its own approaches and models, sets of designs and methodologies and domains of implementation. This program offers a comprehensive and focused curriculum on the theory, methodology, and practice of M&E. Students complete eight (six compulsory and two optional) modules, as well as a research assignment.

The Masters in Management are designed to test student's ability to design and carry out a complex problem solving task within a well-articulated analytical and conceptual framework. Graduates will have a strong foundation in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, and the ability to synthesize knowledge from multiple disciplines. Wits School of Governance believes that our degree cultivates policy practitioners, researchers and policy analysts that make a difference.

The program equips students with a thorough understanding of evaluation theory and practice. The course content is delivered through six block release weeks over the course of two years, making it a convenient option for working professionals or students not based in Cape Town. Graduates have the ability to work with a diverse range of social programs, including poverty reduction, child welfare, HIV/AIDS, public health, housing, domestic violence, drug addiction, agricultural development, food security, and nutrition programs. They can also apply their skills to people management programs in large organizations, aimed at improving skills, performance, or organizational culture.
