Founded in 1998 as a project of the Independent Sector, the Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest (CLPI, now the Council for Nonprofits Everyday Advocacy) is now a national, nonprofit organization that helps charitable organizations increase their effectiveness and impact through advocacy.
CLPI trains nonprofits and promotes increased advocacy within the nonprofit and philanthropy sector in order to create systemic change on the critical issues of our day. It also provides various resources to help improve the advocacy impact of non-profit organisations through lobbying.
The CLPI Roadmap (PDF) (archived link)provides guidance on the questions nonprofits should consider in building their capacity for legislative advocacy and developing a strategy for engagement. The Center also published a brief guide (PDF) (archived link)to evaluation of lobbyists work, in which is is proposed to evaluate the lobbyist work, skills and attributes using following categories: the ability to build relationships, perseverance, organizing the grassroots, coalition building, ability to motivate and communicate with various target groups, proficiency in the use of communication technologies, knowledge of the basics about the legislative process, andthe organizational structure.
In addition, CLPI also gives guidance on principles and practices (PDF) (archived link) for the most effective lobbying, as well as a benchmarking chart (PDF) (archived link)useful in planning and evaluating lobbying in public interest.
