A guide to participatory monitoring of behaviour change communication for HIV/AIDS

This guide, authored by Kirrin Gill, Imogen Fua and Ekong Emah for Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), provides a step by step process that supports program managers implement a participatory approach to evaluation.

"A wide array of participatory appraisal tools and materials about qualitative research options is already available. This guide does not attempt to duplicate these. Instead, it aims to complement them by providing PM tools that use both traditional monitoring and participatory appraisal options. It focuses on tools that are particularly useful for frontline workers in community-based programs.

Participatory Monitoring (PM) allows frontline workers and community partners to continually assess their efforts. It encourages program staff and community members involved in BCC programs to learn from the program implementation process, enabling them to keep their fingers on the pulse of change in their communities. PM ensures that both staff and community partners remain involved participants and genuine stakeholders in the program process." (Gill, Fua & Emah, 2005)
